Police have registered a case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Shiladitya Dev on Wednesday for allegedly making provocative statements over draft NRC.

The case was registered against Hojai legislator Dev following complaints filed by Garia Maria Deshi Yuba Parishad and Krishak Sramik Kalyan Parishad at Latasil police station in Guwahati.

The case (no-01/2018) has been registered under section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Panel Code (IPC).

Dev on Monday had said that names of suspected Bangladeshi nationals have found place in the draft NRC.

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has demanded immediate arrest of Deb for his statements.

“He should be arrested immediately for making such objectionable statements. His statement is against the Supreme Court ruling on NRC update exercise,” KMSS adviser Akhil Gogoi said.

Opposition AIUDF has demanded action against the BJP legislator from Hojai.

In November last year, a resident of Kunapara of Karimganj, Hifzur Rahman filed an FIR against Dev at the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Karimganj following a controversial communal statements made by him.
