Planning underway to accelerate cargo movement along Brahmaputra in Assam, says Sarbananda Sonowal

Planning for speeding up cargo movement along the Brahmaputra River in Assam is underway. This was informed by union minister Sarbananda Sonowal. 

Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways – Sarbananda Sonowal said that improved connectivity will boost economic development of Assam.

The Act East Policy of the Centre is a major factor in transforming Assam and the northeast into a connectivity hub, Sarbananda Sonowal said, according to an official release. 

Sonowal also visited the site for proposed cargo terminal, tourist jetty and river front development projects near Bogibeel bridge over the Brahmaputra River in Dibrugarh district, the official release stated.

Sarbananda Sonowal said that steps are being taken to transform Dibrugarh in Assam into a river port city of the country. 

Developing the National Waterway-2 (Brahmaputra) and NW-16 (Barak) is leveraging our connectivity with Bangladesh, and giving us the route to reach markets of the world, he said.
