The workers of Cachar paper mill situated at Panchgram in Assam’s Hailakandi district began their indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday demanding outstanding payments and service continuity.
Talking to Northeast Now, the president of Cachar Paper Project Workers Union, Manabendra Chakraborty said that their agitation will continue until the government fulfils their demands and restart the mill officially.
Earlier on Monday, the contractual workers organized a big rally at Panchgram displaying placards, banners etc portraying their various demands.
They shouted slogans demanding immediate release of outstanding dues and security to the current job.
The rally traversed through the main thoroughfares of the town and ended at the main gate of the mill.
Manabendra Chakraborty expressed deep disappointment and said contractual workers have not got their outstanding payments of the last 24 months.
Although, the authority had given assurance of paying the outstanding dues by April 30, the employees are yet to get their dues.
