Army and Assam Rifles personnel were deployed in Assam and Tripura where widespread violence occurred during protests against CAA.

As incidents of violence have been erupted in various parts of Assam and Tripura due to protests against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019, the army has been requisitioned in these two northeastern states.

According to sources, four Army columns have requisitioned by the civil administrations so far in Tripura and Assam.

While two Army columns have been deployed in Tripura, the third Army column has been kept standby in Assam, Shillong-based Defence PRO said.

The PRO informed that two columns were deployed in Tripura for internal security on Tuesday.

The requisition for the first column was received at 10:13 am from the deputy commissioner, Radhanagar in Tripura and the same was deployed with immediate effect in Kanchanpur.

The second column of the Army was deployed at Manu in Dhalai district with effect from 10:15 am.

The third column has been requisitioned in Assam’s Bongaigaon district and it has been kept on standby about one km away of the area where the deployment is required as requested by the district administration of the district.

Another column of similar strength has also been kept on standby at Dibrugarh, the defence PRO added.

The approximate strength of one column is about 70 personnel of all ranks.

The field Commanders and Army headquarters are monitoring the situation closely, the defence PRO further said.
