The contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was delayed due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19)?outbreak and will be implemented soon, said BJP chief Jagat Prakash?Nadda.

“CAA will be implemented very soon. It got delayed due to Covid-19 pandemic,” Nadda said on Monday while addressing a meeting with social groups in West Bengal’s Siliguri.

Nadda further said that the party is committed to implementing CAA and that “all will get its benefit.”

The CAA approved by Parliament on December 11, provides citizenship to refugees from six minority religious communities from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the condition that they have lived in India for six years and entered the country by December 31, 2014.

The CAA triggered massive protest in Assam in mid-December and subsequently spread across the country.

The protests were suspended due to the restrictions imposed to curb the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

At least five youths were killed in alleged police firing during the protests.
