Border violence: Assam group protests in front of Mizoram House, threatens to launch economic blockade

The Veer Lachit Sena (VLS), a socio-political organisation of Assam, on Thursday protested in front of Mizoram House on GS Road in Guwahati against the killing of six cops and a civilian of the state at Lailapur along the inter-state border.

The activists of the outfit threatened to launch an economic blockade at Jorabat on the outskirts of Guwahati.

“We will launch a blockade of roads leading to Mizoram to prevent any vehicle from moving to the neighbouring state,” said a Lachit Sena activist.

“We have no conflict with people of Mizoram. But we will not tolerate the provocative statements made by Mizoram politicians. The Assam government must take action against them,” Veer Lachit Sena leader Srinkhal Chaliha told reporters.

Chaliha demanded immediate arrest of Mizoram’s Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena who had issued a public death threat to the Assam Police.

“More than 200 policemen entered our territory and they pushed back our policemen from our own posts and they gave firing orders first, before we fired. They are lucky that we didn’t kill them all. If they come again, we shall kill them all,” he had told reporters in New Delhi.

A team of Assam Police has left for Delhi to question MP Vanlalvena.

Six Assam Police personnel and a civilian had died and 60 others, including an SP, injured in the unprecedented violent clash between the police forces of two states on Monday.

The situation at Lailapur along the Assam-Mizoram border remained tense.
