Drug peddling is a time-testing menace and the multi-crore profit earnings from its proceeds is a full-time job for the easy money seekers and a menace in the Northeast, particularly in the Assam-Nagaland border.

Some are caught early while the bigger fishes are caught at a later stage. Spying for a long time brings in the much-desired results, short-end spying is fruitless because the bigger fishes have more eyes and ears beyond their drug world.

The Assam-Nagaland border gates, one at the Dillai check gate and the other after crossing the Nagaland‘s New Field check gate are the two most infamous check gates through which drug transit takes place towards Mainland India.

The Assam police manning both the check gate have been delivering severe damages to the drug cartels passing through these two check gates.

In one such case featuring one of the biggest players in the drug world, Th Paone popularly known as Didi in her social circles was arrested after a month of hectic surveillance under the supervision of Bokajan SDPO John Das, 4.848 Kg heroin were seized by Karbi Anglong Police.

“It was a big lead and we have been following it pursuant to the Barpathar Police case number 30/21, u/s 21 (c) NDPS act where 64 soap cases containing 723 grams heroin was recovered on  May 25. And after the month of surveillance we arrested Th Paone alias Didi along with 2.125 KG heroin on June 17 under Khatkhati police station,” Das said.

“Didi was one of the biggest players in the drugs world,” he added.

Stressing further on the deep-rooted drug dealing taking place in the Assam-Nagaland border area, the SDPO said, “Again following the above referred Khatkhati PS we found another big player, a lady, identified as Rozi Rongmei, 52, a resident of Laharijan under Khatkhati police station, who is a close associate of Didi.

Surveillance was the only way out to unearth deep-rooted narcotic drug lords, SDPO Das affirmatively said and further stated that a dedicated team was formed to keep surveillance on her house and her movement.

As her house is close to the Assam-Nagaland border under the Khatkhati police station, so it becomes difficult for surveillance as any suspected movement in that area will blow our cover, he said.

“We were able to collect her phone number and learnt that she is in need of new customers and we put one of our best sources to get the job done,” Das said.

Deliberating further on the surveillance on the prize catch, the SDPO said that a deal was fixed to deliver a good quantity of heroin.

“It was very difficult to convince her. Finally, she agreed and today on August 12 at about 8 pm while she was coming to deliver heroin we apprehended Rozi Rongmei at Laharijan under Khatkhati police station along with 150 packets of fine quality heroin weighing 2 KG.

Along with Rozi, another Naga person identified as Angma Kamei of Laharijan has also been arrested in this regard.

Commenting on the success of the month-long surveillance on Th Paone alias Didi, Das said as the operation was conducted on the Assam-Nagaland border so officers from different police stations are engaged during operations to deal with any kind of situation.

“Thus in a single case follow up Karbi Anglong police recovered total of 4.848 Kg heroin (723 grams + 2.125 kg +2 kg). We will continue to break the chain of drug peddlers in the Assam Area,” the SDPO said.
