The Assam Congress has written to the election commission (EC) demanding disqualification of BJP’s Bhawanipur candidate for by-polls – Phanidhar Talukdar.
The Assam Congress demanded disqualification of BJP’s Phanidhar Talukdar for allegedly “indulging in bribery and corrupt” practices.
In the letter to the EC, senior Assam Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma stated: “It has come to the notice of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee through media reports and video clippings that the BJP candidate for Bhawanipur constituency Sri Phani Talukdar is indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to voters outside his residence in Bhawanipur.”
“This brazen act by the candidate is gross violation of the provision of section 123(1) of the Tepresentation of the People’s Act 1951 as well as the election commission of India’s model code of conduct,” Sharma added.

“Under the circumstances Assam Pradesh Congress Committee requests you to urgently take prompt and immediate action against Sri Phani Talukdar, BJP candidate by disqualifying him from contesting the ensuing by-elections to be held on 30 October 2021,” Assam Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma added in her letter to Assam chief election officer Nitin Khade.
