Under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Food Safety Department of Assam has prohibited the sale of popular packaged drinking water brand Bisleri in the state with immediate effect.

Presence of fluoride, higher than the prescribed limit, has been reported in the water.

“Bottled water of the Bisleri brand is harmful to health,” stated a notification issued by the department.

“According to section 3 (1) of the Food Safety Standards Act 2006, we have found a large amount of fluoride in the water of this brand, which is harmful to health,” the notification stated.

The notification was released by the department on Thursday, in which information was given about the investigation report of the Food Safety Department of Assam.

The notification further stated that the water of this brand was tested as per Regulation 2.10.8 of Food Safety and Standards.
