All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday appointed former Bihpuria MLA Bhupen Borah as the new president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
Bhupen Borah, who is serving as the AICC general secretary, will now replace Rajya Sabha MP, Ripun Bora as the Assam Congress chief.
After the party’s poor performance in the Assam Assembly elections 2021 and his defeat in the Gohpur Assembly seat, Ripun Bora resigned as the Assam Congress president taking responsibility for the defeat of the Assembly polls in the state.
However, the party High Command asked Ripun Bora to continue as the PCC president until a new president is appointed.
The AICC president has also appointed three new working presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
According to a press release, issued on Saturday by AICC general secretary and MP, KC Venugopal, the AICC president has appointed former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami, North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Sarukhetri MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar as new APCC working presidents.
The party has appreciated the contributions of outgoing PCC president Ripun Bora, the release stated.
Bhupen Borah, 51, won the Bihpuria Assembly seat in Assam’s Lakhimpur district twice – 2006 and 2011.
He was born to Bogiram Borah and Pratima Borah in 1970 at Adarshagaon in Lakhimpur’s Pohumora area.
Borah served as the spokesperson of the Assam government during Tarun Gogoi’s tenure.
He also served as the president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC).
Borah is a former general secretary of the Dibrugarah University Students’ Union.
He did his MA in Political Science from Dibrugarh University.
