“The beauty of our Constitution lies in its flexible character which can be changed as per the needs of the exigencies of time,” said Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi while addressing a function held on the eve of Constitution Day at Raj Bhavan on Sunday.

Prof Mukhi is his speech said that the most remarkable feature about Indian Constitution is that its philosophy is everlasting- but its structure and clauses are flexible. The Constitution framers were enlightened and far-sighted enough to give future generations the power to amend and change clauses as may be needed with the times.

The beauty of the Constitution is that it is changed as per the needs of the requirement, the Governor observed.

The Governor also said that the Constitution of India is considered as the supreme law of the country providing framework for the governance of the country. As this document is created by the Constituent Assembly and adopted by the people of the country as enshrined in its Preamble, it ensures constitutional supremacy rather than the parliamentary supremacy.

It is the world’s largest constitution with 395 articles, 22 parts and eight schedules at the time of its adoption.

Indian constitution is a fine blend of five appendices with 101 amendments of securing its people’s fundamental rights and realization of the aspirations of the people in the directive principles and execution of these provisions by providing checks and balances among the three organs of the government for fair governance.

Its enduring quality is tested in the last seven decades. With 101 amendments, its dynamism to respond to the changes taking place in the fast developing country like India is also proved.

“We have a constitution that is robust, comprehensive, stable and dynamic enough to realize the aspirations of our people,” Prof Mukhi added.

Chairman, National Green Tribunal while speaking on the occasion said that the framers of the Constitution while giving a final shape to the Constitution tried their level best so that the constitution becomes a comprehensive document which meets the aspirations of the people at different time and juncture.

He, however, observed that since independence though the country has progressed substantially many of its people are still living in poverty fighting for four square meal and other basic needs like shelter, clothing etc.

He also said that the country and the government need to work to toe the line of expectations of the freedom fighters who sacrificed everything for the cause of the country. He also gave a brief account of the constitution and its various clauses which are there for country to follow and go forward.

Earlier, Vice Chancellor of National Law University and Judicial Academy Prof J S Patil gave an inaugural address describing the constitution and its philosophy.

Former Governor of Meghalaya R S Mooshahary, former Governor of Bihar Devananda Konwar, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, senior government officials, judges of Gauhati High Court, members from the legal fraternity, former DGP Mukesh Sahay, Vice Chancellors of different universities of the State, editors of media houses,  and other dignitaries were also present at the function.
