Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed the ULFA-I to not call for a customary bandh on Republic Day (January 26).

“I appeal ULFA-I not to call a bandh on Republic Day. They didn’t call a bandh on Independence Day (August 15) and I urge them not to do so on Republic Day also,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

CM Sarma said that there has been a lot of “positive development” in regards to proposed peace parley with the outfit.

Meanwhile, reacting to pro-talks ULFA expressing doubts over ‘sincerity’ of the Centre towards the peace talks with it, the Assam chief minister urged the Centre to finish talks with the group.

“I urge the Centre to complete talks with the pro-talks ULFA. Negotiations with both the groups can go simultaneously,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Earlier, Sarma had said that the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-Independent has shown keen interest in peace talks.

“Sovereignty demand of the ULFA-I is the only stumbling block in the peace talks between the government and the ULFA-I,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had said.

He added: “I dare to say that it is the beginning of the end. We are hopeful of a peaceful settlement with the ULFA-I.”
