Assam’s renowned linguist, educationist Dr Ramesh Pathak passes away

Assam’s renowned linguist, educationist and litterateur, Sahityacharya Dr. Ramesh Pathak passed away on Tuesday.

Dr Pathak, who was suffering from some ailments for the last several months, died in the evening on Tuesday evening at his residence in the Hatigaon area in Guwahati.

He was 79.

The eminent linguist was a former professor in the Department of Assamese at Cotton College (now university).

Dr Pathak has a lot of contributions to the Assamese language and literature.

He has immense contributions towards taking the thoughts of Assam’s great Vaisnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva to foreign countries.

In recognition of his contributions towards the Assamese language and literature, Asam Sahitya Sabha, the largest literary body of Assam, honoured him with the title of ‘Sahityacharya’.

The Publication Board Assam recently conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award 2020 on Dr Pathak.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and finance & education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma have condoled the demise of Dr Pathak.

In his condolence message, Sonowal said, “I express my deep condolence at the demise of distinguished linguist and educationist Dr Ramesh Pathak. I express my sympathy towards the bereaved family and wish eternal peace for the departed soul.”

In his condolence message, finance & education minister Dr Sarma said, “I am saddened at the demise of distinguished litterateur, researcher and scholar Dr Ramesh Pathak.”

The demise of Dr Pathak is a huge loss for Assam as he made valuable contributions with his research on language and literature, he added.
