Green Oscar winner and Assam’s environmentalist Dr Purnima Devi Barman met New Zealand High Commissioner to India, Joanna Kempker at New Zealand High Commissioner’s residence in New Delhi on Thursday.

They had discussions on the issues of Hargila (Greater Adjutant Stork) conservation in Assam.

After the meeting, Barman was seen posing with Joanna Kempker, who was wearing traditional Assamese mekhela-chador with designs of Hargila on it.

It may be mentioned here that the New Zealand High Commission recently supported a livelihood support and education campaign for Assam’s Hargila army.

This would help Hargila army in enabling the women to take up conservation of Hargila in and around Dadara village in Assam’s Kamrup district.

Barman has been engaged in conservation of Hargila for a long time in Kamrup district and it is due to her effort that the Dadara and some adjacent villages in Assam’s Kamrup district have become a huge colony of storks.

Purnima Barman was conferred the prestigious Whitley Awards, also known as the Green Oscars in May 2017 by Whitley Fund for Nature for her works regarding the conservation of Hargila in Assam.
