Assamโ€™s Woolah bagless tea wins Great Taste Award 2026, marking global recognition for the stateโ€™s sustainable tea innovation.

Guwahati: Assamโ€™s tea industry has achieved another global recognition as Woolah Rare Assam Green Tea received a 1-Star Great Taste Award 2026, among the most respected honours in the international food and beverage sector.

The award, presented by the UK-based Guild of Fine Food, evaluates products through a strict blind-tasting process conducted by a panel of more than 500 chefs, food experts, writers, buyers and retailers. The judging process keeps brand identity and packaging hidden, with products assessed only on their taste and quality.

The Great Taste Awards are widely regarded as one of the worldโ€™s leading food and drink accreditation programmes.

The recognition is particularly significant for Woolah as it celebrates the companyโ€™s patented โ€œBagless Tea Dipโ€- a tea innovation made entirely from compressed whole tea leaves that removes the need for conventional tea bags and helps avoid concerns associated with microplastics.

Founded in Sivasagar, Woolah has combined Assamโ€™s traditional tea-making heritage with sustainable practices. The award-winning Rare Assam Green Tea is made from organically grown whole leaves sourced through the companyโ€™s Woolah Organic Mission, which works directly with tea growers to encourage organic cultivation and support rural livelihoods, especially among women.

Woolah founder Upamanyu Borkakoty said the award was meaningful because the judges evaluated the tea purely on its taste.

โ€œSince the judges never saw our brand, packaging or story, this recognition is entirely based on the quality of the tea. This honour belongs equally to Assamโ€™s tea growers and our team,โ€ Borkakoty said.

The product is distributed in the United Kingdom by Xcillency Limited, which has positioned Woolah as a sustainable option combining the quality of loose-leaf tea with the convenience of traditional tea bags.

The latest award adds to Woolahโ€™s growing global recognition and reflects a changing trend in Assamโ€™s tea sector, with greater focus on innovation, sustainability and premium products for international markets.
