The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden situated at Japorigog area in Guwahati will have two giraffes soon.
Authorities of the state zoo said this on Friday adding that a male Giraffe will be brought from Mysore zoo and a female giraffe will be brought in from Patna zoo.
“The two giraffes are already on their way to Assam state zoo,” a senior official of the Zoo said on Friday.
He said that that the Giraffes are being brought to Assam as a part of an animal exchange programme approved by the central zoo authority.
Assam forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya tweeted, “Giraffe is on the way to @assamzoo. It will again be part of the Zoo after a long gap of 8 years.”
“The female giraffe is coming from @PatnaZoo under an animal exchange programme approved by Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi,” the tweet added.

In 2011, female giraffe Laxmi died due to age-related ailments at the Assam zoo.
Born in Guwahati State Zoo, Laxmi used to be one of the biggest attractions for visitors for more than two decades.
Prior to Laxmi, another female Giraffe called Saraswati died in Assam state zoo in 2004 due to age-related ailment.
