The moral turpitude which has beset the country in general has also touched Jorhat, the most literate district in Assam.  In the past two months three youths have been caught on camera masturbating in broad daylight in front of two girls’ hostels in the Tarajan area of the town.

A police complaint in this connection was lodged by Amar Kalita, SFI general secretary, Jorhat at the Jorhat police station here today after he became aware of this continued sexual harassment when clippings of these acts were uploaded on Facebook.

“The girls did not want to be identified so they gave the videos to a friend to upload on Facebook,” Kalita said.  “The friend, Abhinav Bharali, is also a member of SFI and he showed us the clippings,” Amar said.

Abhinav in his Facebook post has appealed to the people to share these clips as widely as possible so that these depraved characters can be caught.

“The post also asked the people not to ask stupid questions like why the girls had not reported this to the police, why they had not noted the license numbers, etc.

“I am a resident of Jorhat and I have never felt so ashamed at what was happening in this place.  These people are now indulging in such depraved acts and are sure to turn rapists if given the opportunity,” he further said.

Abhinav in his post further said that in the third case they were informed by the girls and he and his friends armed with sticks had rushed to catch the man but he managed to flee.

A source said that the license plates of the vehicles, motorcycles and a scooter, could not be made out nor could the faces as they were covered by nose masks. The police said that they had been aware of this and were trying to nab the culprits.

“Although this has been on for quite some time we are happy that someone from the public has come out to lodge a complaint.  We are working hard to nab these immoral youths and hope for a breakthrough soon,” a police official said.
