A 10-year-old child lost life after a wild elephant trampled him to death in Bokakhat sub-division under Golaghat district.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon in the forest near Mikirchang Bagicha village under the Bokakhat sub-division.

The deceased has been identified as Dip Rawtia.

Dip Rawtia was the son of Samara Rawtia, a resident of the Bor Line of Mikirchang tea garden.

The wild elephant attacked Dip Rawtia while he along with some of his friends went to collect firewood from the forest near Mikirchang Bagicha village.

While his friends managed to flee, Dip Rawtia was attacked by a wild elephant and he died on the spot.

Later, the family members and other locals recovered the body of Dip Rawtia in the forest.

Incidents of man-elephant conflict are reported in Golaghat district from time to time.

In June 2020, a herd of wild elephants entered Aitopnia Miri gaon in Golaghat district and destroyed the house of a person, identified as Mridujyoti Bora.

Betel nut trees, banana trees and agricultural crops in the village were also reportedly destroyed by a herd of 45-50 wild elephants.

Most of the villagers of the man-elephant conflict-affected areas in Golaghat keep on complaining that they hardly see any forest team visiting their areas to decrease the man-elephant conflict.
