In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old man has been allegedly beaten to death by a group of villagers on suspicion of practicing witchcraft in lower Assam’s Baksa district along Indo-Bhutan border on Monday.
The incident took place on Monday at Bogoribari village under Kumarikata police station in Tamulpur sub division of the district.

Police said around 200 villagers on Monday held a Kangaroo court and accused Biren Boro of practicing witchcraft. A group of villagers subsequently started to beat him black and blue.
On being informed, a team of police from Kumarikata police station rushed to the spot to rescue Boro from the mob.
The villagers also allegedly attacked the police team when it tried to rescue the victim. At least five policemen were injured in the attack.

The victim who was critically injured in the attack was taken to a hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries, a police official said.
Police have registered a case at Kumarikata police station based on a complaint filed by the victim’s wife and so far arrested five persons in connection with the incident.
Police said the villagers also vandalised his house.
The arrested villagers have been identified as Laksindra Boro (32), Sunos Narjary (21), Birkhang Basumatary (23), Ringkhang Basumatary (21) and Rajen Narjary (47).
