Guwahati: Vantara has proposed assisting the Assam government in establishing three Wildlife Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centres in the state, including a dedicated facility for Asian elephants.
In a letter dated August 12, 2026, addressed to the Special Chief Secretary of Assam’s Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, Vantara CEO Vivaan Karani said the proposal was made on behalf of founder Anant Ambani to support the state’s wildlife conservation efforts.
The proposal was submitted on the occasion of World Elephant Day, observed annually on August 12, with Vantara expressing its commitment to strengthening wildlife conservation in Assam.
Vantara is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility located in Motikhavdi village in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and is operated by Anant Ambani, the youngest son of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. The facility had earlier come under scrutiny for the transfer of elephants from Assam and other parts of the Northeast to Jamnagar, amid concerns raised by wildlife activists and conservationists about the animals’ movement.
According to the letter, the proposed centres would be established under the guidance and supervision of the Assam Forest Department. One of the three facilities would be dedicated exclusively to the welfare of Asian elephants.
The proposed centres would include species-specific animal housing, an advanced veterinary hospital, diagnostic laboratories and animal nutrition centres.
Vantara said the location, scale and configuration of the three facilities would be finalised in consultation with the Assam Forest Department.
The organisation also proposed that the facilities be handed over to the Assam government without any financial or legal obligations after their establishment.
The letter highlighted Assam’s rich biodiversity and the presence of rare and endangered species, while recognising the conservation efforts of the state government and the Assam Forest Department.
The proposal has now been submitted to the Assam government for consideration.
