Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly told BJP MPs that the proscribed United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) is in talks with the Central government and a positive outcome is likely.

The Prime Minister informed the BJP MPs that the Government of India was in talks with the Paresh Baruah faction of the ULFA and was trying to bring them over ground, The Assam Tribune reported.

“It will be good if this faction comes on board,” Modi reportedly said.

According to the newspaper, Modi said this in a closed-door meeting in New Delhi with party MPs.

ULFA (I) C-in-C Baruah on January 29 had said the banned outfit would join talks with the Centre only if sovereignty is the main agenda.

Baruah had told a local news channel the outfit would join talks only if there are no formalities, talks are held in an atmosphere of trust and sovereignty was the ‘one-point agenda’ on the table.

“We are demanding sovereignty and that is the one point agenda for us. It should be on the negotiating table. There is no need to go to Delhi for discussions, we would want the talks to be held in Assam,” the ULFA (I) C-in-C had said.

Union home minister Amit Shah had said after signing of the Bodo Accord in New Delhi that remaining militant outfits in Northeast including ULFA-I are welcome to join peace talks.
