Doomdooma: A wild elephant was spotted with a large tyre tightly lodged around its neck in Assam’s Golaghat district on Thursday, prompting concern among residents and wildlife watchers over the animal’s safety.
The elephant was seen moving through the Marangi-Bakiyal area, where the tyre could potentially restrict its movement and cause injuries if it remains trapped for an extended period.
Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia said he had contacted the Forest Department and discussed arrangements to safely remove the tyre from the animal. He also urged people in the area to remain calm and avoid approaching or disturbing the elephant.
The incident was reported from the Bakiyal forest-block area of Marangi, a region that has experienced recurring human-elephant conflict.
Wildlife observers have expressed concern that the tyre could cause wounds, restrict the elephant’s movement or lead to other health complications. They have warned residents against chasing, surrounding, provoking or attempting to rescue the animal themselves, as such actions could increase the risk to both the elephant and people nearby.
Forest officials are expected to assess the elephant’s condition and plan an operation to remove the tyre safely while minimising stress and the possibility of further injury.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour during encounters with wild elephants. Residents have been advised to avoid gathering in large numbers or making loud noises and to immediately inform Forest Department personnel about the animal’s location and movements.
The elephant enjoys the highest level of legal protection under India’s wildlife protection framework, and unlawful interference with protected wildlife can attract penal action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
