Guwahati: Two undertrial prisoners lodged in separate jail facilities in Assamโs Nagaon district were found dead in their beds on Saturday morning, prompting the district administration to order an inquiry into the incidents.
The deaths were reported from Nagaon Central Jail and Nagaon Special Jail, both located within the same premises but functioning under separate administrations.
At Nagaon Central Jail, an inmate identified as Jitumoni Konwar, a resident of Raha, was found unresponsive in his bed during a routine morning inspection. Jail authorities said the body was discovered during the daily check.
In a similar incident at Nagaon Special Jail, another undertrial prisoner, Rupsingh Dera, was also found dead in his bed. Officials said Dera was an accused in a murder case and had been lodged in the special jail pending trial.
Sources said both deaths came to light during morning rounds by prison staff, triggering concern among jail authorities.
The exact cause of death in both cases has not yet been ascertained. Officials have not indicated whether the deaths were due to illness, medical complications, or involved any foul play.
Taking serious note of the incidents, Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma has ordered a detailed inquiry. The probe has been entrusted to Additional District Commissioner Gopal Sarma, who will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and submit a report to the district administration.
Officials said further details are expected after the completion of the inquiry and receipt of post-mortem examination reports.
