Two rickshaw pullers have been arrested by the police in Assam’s Jorhat late on Monday night on charges of raping a woman in the heart of Jorhat town. 

The two arrested rickshaw pullers allegedly raped a woman under a shed of Amar Haat, a daily fish and vegetable market in the Tarajan area along the Assam-Trunk Road in the heart of Jorhat town. 

The two accused have been identified as Nagen Saikia (25) and Arup Jyoti Kalita (22). 

While, Nagen Saikia is a resident of Ajanta bypass, Arup Jyoti Kalita is a resident of Malow Ali. 

A case (No 1303/2021) has been registered at Jorhat police station and the duo have been booked under section 376 IPC. 

A police source informed this correspondent that on Monday night at about 8:35 pm, information was received that one woman had been raped and left abandoned at the market place.

“A team of police officials led by SI Indumoni Gogoi immediately left for crime scene and rescued the victim. The victim who was found with her clothes torn was immediately sent to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital for medical checkup,” the police source said. 

As per the police source, the victim works in a restaurant in Jorhat town.  

While, Nagen Saikia was arrested at about 10 pm on Monday, Arup Jyoti Kalita was arrested a couple of hours later.  

Meanwhile, the Jorhat district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Tuesday morning took out a protest rally against the alleged rape of a woman.
