Doomdooma: Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team from Margherita Police Station carried out a late-night raid at Ledo Tea Estate in Tinsukia district on Monday, seizing suspected heroin and apprehending two persons.
Police said 10.19 grams of suspected heroin were recovered from a residence during the operation, which was part of an intensified drive to curb the growing drug network in the tea garden belt of upper Assam. Mobile phones and empty plastic containers, believed to have been used for storage and distribution of narcotics, were also seized.
The search and seizure were conducted in the presence of independent witnesses and were videographed to ensure transparency and adherence to legal procedures, officials added.
Both accused have been taken into custody and are being interrogated. A case has been registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and further investigation is under way to ascertain possible links to a larger drug trafficking network.
Expressing concern over the spread of narcotics in tea garden areas, Irot Tanti, a senior leader of the All Tea Tribes Studentsโ Association (ATTSA), said the growing presence of drug networks in such communities was alarming. He called for sustained and stringent police action to curb the menace.
