North Lakhimpur: Two brothers drowned in the Subansiri River in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Monday morning while performing a religious ritual for their deceased father.
The victims were identified as Madhab Baruah, 47, and his younger brother Bhairab Baruah, 43. Both were employed by the Assam government.
According to reports, the incident occurred at Ghagar Ghat while the brothers were performing Pinda Dan, a traditional Hindu ritual for deceased ancestors.
They were carrying out the ritual in the river when strong currents swept them away.
After receiving information about the incident, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams reached the spot and launched a search and rescue operation.
The search for the brothers is still underway.
