The Assam government on Friday announced it will set up five hospitals to exclusively treat coronavirus infected patients of the state.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said each of the five hospitals will have 300 beds with ICU and ventilation facilities.

“Of the five proposed hospitals, one will be set up in Guwahati and another one in Dibrugarh. For the remaining three hospitals, we will identify the sites very soon,” Sarma told reporters in Guwahati on Friday.

He said that four hospitals will be set up with the funds donated by some MPs and employees’ union of Assam.

Although no coronavirus positive case reported in the state so far, the state government is preparing for any possible deterioration in the situation.

Minister Sarma said later the hospitals will be converted into general public health centre.

“The hospitals will be set up at Rs 40 to Rs 45 crore each,” he added.
