The Assam government has planned to set up a special laboratory to study novel coronavirus.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said in Guwahati that a laboratory for studying the virus would be set up in Guwahati soon.

“This pandemic has exposed us to a new set of challenges. And to battle it, we need to up the ante,” said  Sarma, assuring that the state has begun to “comprehend the virus better”.

Minister Sarma’s announcement came at a time when the Covid-19 positive cases in the state have crossed 5,000 mark.

A total of 5,006 people have tested positive for the infection in the state so far.

The number of active cases stood at 1,928, while nine people died and three migrated to other States.
