Assam: Tinsukia BJP president beaten up by protestors against Citizenship Bill

Tinsukia district president of the BJP, Lakheswar Moran was thrashed and manhandled on Wednesday by a section of people who were protesting Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Tinsukia town.

The incident occurred at 3.05 pm when the BJP leader arrived to attend a meeting organised by Lok Jagran Manch at the  Golap Chandra Rabi Chandra Natya Mandir located at Tinkunia area of the town.

The Lok Jagran Manch has recently been holding a series of meeting in upper Assam to “dispel myths” about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which has kept the state in a boil since the last one month.

According to eyewitnesses, after Moran had arrived at the spot, he was first greeted with slogans and black flags by around 3000-strong protesters.

Suddenly, a group of protestors started assaulting the BJP leader. He was slapped, beaten and pulled by the hair while the police remained a mute spectator. Some other BJP members were also assaulted by the protestors.

An eyewitness said, “The protestors rained blows and kicks on him but the police did not intervened. To escape the mob fury he tried to run but fell down after chased by the protestors. He again tried to flee but once again fell down after hitting a bicycle. It was then the police finally came to his rescue.”

The injured BJP leader was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. BJP sources said that the party would lodge an FIR at the Tinsukia police station in connection with the incident.

A section of BJP leaders condemned the cowardice incident. After the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8, widespread protest has been witnessed across Assam.
