Police on Tuesday arrested three youths on charges of assaulting on-duty policemen at Makum in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The arrested youths have been identified as Bhaskar Gohain, Kiran Gohain and Kaushik Gohain, all residents of Laipuli in Tinsukia.

On Monday at around 3 pm, Mayur Ranjan Das, an on-duty police constable of the Makum-based 2nd Assam Police Battalion (APBn) was allegedly assaulted by a group of six youths near a road side eatery when he asked them to wear face masks.

The youths who were said to be in an inebriated condition at that time took umbrage on his remarks and landed a vicious attack on him.

A video of the incident where a group of youths can be seen assaulting a police constable went viral on social media.

The video of the assault which was taken by an unidentified person on his cellphone later went viral in which the youths can be seen kicking, slapping and hitting the constable.

The policeman who remained unprovoked is later seen quietly leaving the place riding his motorcycle.

Tinsukia SP Debojit Deuri said, “Such attacks on police personnel won’t be tolerated. We have detained three accused from Laipuli area and rest of the culprits will be in our custody soon.”

“Many unruly youths are seen roaming the streets during the lockdown period. The youth should know the gravity of the situation. Due to Covid-19, the restrictions were imposed by the government to curb the Covid-19 infection. The people should follow the guidelines of Covid-19,” said an official.

Police said the other three youths were arrested shortly.
