Assam: Suspected ATM robber injured in police encounter in Chabua

One person was shot by the Dibrugarh Police while he was allegedly trying to loot an SBI ATM located near Military Engineering Service in Chabua of Dibrugarh district in the wee hours of Monday.

The person was identified as Bitu Bhumij (23) of the Bismile area of Chabua.

“Based on a tip-off, Chabua police started operation and spotted a miscreant trying to break the ATM. The person attacked the police personals with his machete. The police had to open fire in retaliation to nab the culprit. He injured during the firing”, said a police source.

Additional SP Bitul Chetia said, “We received information from SBI after midnight that one of their ATM located at Chabua near MES Tiniali has been mutilated and hacked by miscreants.”

He allegedly attacked the police with his “Dao” and in retaliation, the police had to shoot him.

“He was shot at the ankles and is undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital”, the ASP said.

On Monday, another State Bank of India ATM corner in Nagaon’s Raha was looted by unidentified persons.

As per police, the incident took place in the wee hours of Monday.
