A heavily pregnant woman – Mafida Khatoon – underwent labour pain and delivered a baby at a NRC Seva Kendra (NSK) in Dhubri district.

Reports stated that the woman was waiting for her turn vis-à-vis NRC hearing at Fakirganj in South Salmara in Dhubri district of Assam. Mafida Khatoon from Chapar village in Dhubri was suddenly in “excruciating labour pain” while at the NSK.

Rabiul Islam, a local, noticed Mafida “in extreme pain” and immediately informed the local women of the area who assisted her in giving birth to a baby boy.

After coming to know about the child birth case in the NSK centre, the South Salmara unit of AASU appealed to the NSK officials to re-schedule the hearing date for Mafida’s family.

The AASU unit also said that pregnant women, elderly people and children should be exempted from NRC hearings.
