Assam State Power Workers Union (ASPWU) Biswanath Chariali division staged a protest against Assam government’s move to privatize APDCL’s 33/11 kV stations across the State on Friday.
The government has invited tender for privatization of 47 such power stations.
Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) Pensioners’ Association also joined the protest.
The activists sent a memorandum to the APDCL Chairman through Biswanath Chariali division General Manager Pranab Kumar Gogoi.
On the other hand, ASPWU activists also staged a protest in front of Bongaigaon Electrical Sub-division and Majuli Electrical Sub-division.
The ASPWU Biswanath Chariali division Secretary Utpal Saikia said, “We will continue our protest until the government stops such acts which harms the interest of the indigenous people of the State.”
The activists also expressed anguish over the Central government’s move to hand over the Kaziranga National Park and other three historical sites to the private firms for maintenance under ‘Adopt A Heritage’ scheme.
JTI Group has been named as the Monument Mitra for the Kaziranga National Park and the Sivasagar monuments.
The three historical monuments of Assam in Sivasagar district, which are proposed to be handed over to a private firm under the scheme, are the 18th century amphitheatre Rang Ghar, the Ahom royal palace Kareng Ghar and the Ahom-era Shiva temple – Shiva Doul.
