Two persons, including a child, were killed on the spot when a speeding truck ran over them in Kabuganj area under Sonai constituency in Cachar on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses informed that a loaded truck heading towards Mizoram ran over one Pinki Paul and her daughter Tania Paul while the duo was on their way to school.

The residents of the area immediately stopped the truck (bearing registration number NL-01-AB-3211) and blocked the NH-54, apart from setting ablaze another truck with registration MZ-01-S-3032.

Sonai MLA and Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Aminul Haque Laskar reached the accident spot and took stock of the situation.

“I have been repeatedly urged everyone to not to set-up a market in this part of the national highway where we have different schools and other educational institutes,” he said while briefing the media.

“The market area that has come up here has made the area overcrowded,” Laskar added.

“With negligence of the drivers adding to the ever-increasing crowd, mishaps have become quite frequent here,” Laskar added.

The district management has also announced an ex-gratia to the family of the deceased.
