Doomdooma: Two youths lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a dumper truck in Doomdooma in Assamโ€™s Tinsukia district on Wednesday night, triggering strong reactions from local residents and the All Tea Tribes Studentsโ€™ Association (ATTSA), which on Thursday prevented the movement of dumpers in the area.

The deceased were identified as Raju Toppo (28) and Anthony Sona (27), both residents of nearby Phillobari village.

According to police sources, the accident took place around 9 pm near the Beesakopie Tea Factory along National Highway 37, a stretch locally known for frequent road accidents.

Police said the two youths were travelling on a motorcycle when a speeding dumper allegedly hit the bike from behind, causing fatal injuries.

โ€œA case has been registered, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated,โ€ a police official said, adding that the bodies were sent to Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.

Officials at Doomdooma FRU Hospital stated that both victims were brought dead to the hospital.

โ€œThe victims had sustained severe injuries in the collision and were declared dead on arrival,โ€ a hospital source said.

An ATTSA leader, while expressing concern over recurring road accidents involving heavy vehicles, said, โ€œUntil stricter safety measures are ensured, reckless movement of dumpers should not continue on public roads.โ€

Residents of the area alleged that heavy vehicles, including dumpers and tractors carrying green tea leaves, frequently move at high speed along the highway, often posing risks to commuters and pedestrians.

Locals have repeatedly demanded stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and tighter monitoring of commercial vehicle operations on the accident-prone route.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
