Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday filed nomination papers for the ensuing Rajya Sabha by-polls in Assam.

Sonowal filed his nomination papers at the Assembly secretariat in presence of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, agriculture minister & AGP president Atul Bora, handloom & textile minister UG Brahma and water resources minister Pijush Hazarika.

BTC chief & United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro and Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita were also present during the filing of nomination papers by Union minister Sonowal.

Union minister for shipping, ports, waterways and Ayush, Sonowal currently represents the Majuli Assembly constituency.

After the BJP-led alliance came to power in Assam, the party high command announced Himanta Biswa Sarma, who served as the finance & health minister during the Sonowal regime, as the chief minister of the state.

After Himanta Biswa Sarma, the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), became the chief minister of Assam, Sonowal was made a Cabinet minister in Narendra Modi ministry.

Sonowal has been given the portfolios of shipping, ports, waterways and Ayush.

In the first tenure of the Modi government, Sonowal served as the Union minister of state for sports.

Sonowal led the BJP in the 2016 Assam Assembly elections.

After being elected as an MLA from Majuli, he became the first chief minister of a BJP-led government in Assam.

But Sonowal needs to be elected to the Rajya Sabha in order to continue his current role in the central government.

The Rajya Sabha by-poll in Assam is slated for October 4, 2021.

The Rajya Sabha by-poll in Assam was necessitated after BJP member Biswajit Daimary resigned from the Upper House.
