Digboi: Digboi Police have arrested a sixth accused in connection with the mob killing of Budheshwar Garh. The latest arrest comes amid intensified investigations into the assault that had triggered widespread protests in the town.
The accused, identified as Amardeep Sahu alias Nene, was apprehended during a late-night operation on Saturday. Police said he had allegedly gone into hiding after the incident. Acting on specific inputs, a team led by Co-District Superintendent of Police Himangshu Gohain, along with Officer-in-Charge Pranjal Chetia of Digboi Police Station, traced him to Duliajan in Dibrugarh district.
With this arrest, the total number of persons taken into custody in the case has risen to six. Earlier, Shero Khan, Sonu Bhattacharjee, Bikram Sahani, Ajit Ali and Ramajan Khan were arrested. All five remain in judicial custody, police sources said.
The case has been registered at Digboi Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Investigators are continuing to reconstruct the sequence of events surrounding the fatal assault, which took place near the Chariali Bazar area.
Police officials said CCTV footage from multiple locations is being examined. โFurther arrests may follow based on analysis of surveillance recordings,โ a senior officer said.
The killing had led to a three-day shutdown in Digboi, with markets and business establishments remaining closed amid public anger. The situation eased on Saturday evening after discussions between the district administration, police officials and community representatives, following which the shutdown was lifted.
Meanwhile, the local MLA, who had earlier visited Assam Medical College and Hospital to meet the bereaved family, handed over financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the deceasedโs wife.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to maintain calm.
