Eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district on Friday began segregation at source during door to door garbage collection.
Sivasagar deputy commissioner Dr M S Lakshmi Priya inaugurated the door to door collection from SMB water supply project campus at Phukan Nagar.

The door to door collection has been initiated by Women SHGs under DAY NULM in association with Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).
The initiative began on Friday at ward no 10 and ward no 14 under Sivasagar Municipal Board.
The inauguration programme was also attended by Sivasagar Municipal Board chairperson Mridusmita Sinha, executive officer Rituraj Bordoloi, vice-chairman Azad Alam, ward commissioners of 10 and 14 No wards, AEE of Sivasagar Municipal Board, Mridul Nath, CPO of Swachh Bharat Mission, Mirajuddin Ahmed, CPM of DAY-NULM, Sivasagar and local public.

The purpose of the event was highlighted by executive officer of Sivasagar Municipal Board.
The deputy commissioner also addressed the gathering and told them the importance of door to door collection with source segregation which is the first step towards successful solid waste management.
The deputy commissioner appealed all the local public to start backyard composting or pit composting.
They also appealed the householder to keep the waste separately (dry waste and wet waste).
Sivasagar Municipal Board has initially started the door to door collection by engaging the ALF/SHGs of DAY-NULM as pilot project in ward no 10 and 14.
The remaining wards will be covered periodically by engaging ALF/SHGs in coming days, the deputy commissioner said.
The deputy commissioner also emphasized on women empowerment through the development of sustainable solid waste management by ALF/SHGs.
The deputy commissioner reiterated this kind activity will also help women SHGs in income generation as well as to sustain their livelihoods.
The first segregation at source of garbage has been collected by the deputy commissioner herself.
A MoU has been also signed between Sibasagar Municipal Board and ALFs/SHGs of DAY- NULM namely Mulagabharu and Janani ALF.
The initiative of engaging SHGs in the processes of garbage collection is unique in Sivasagar district.
