Noted folk singer from Assam, Kalpana Patowary joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in a function of the party headquarters at Ambari in Guwahati on Friday.

She joined the AGP, which is a partner in the BJP-led coalition party in Assam, in presence of the party president and Assam agriculture minister Atul Bora.

The joining programme was also attended by Assam food & civil supplies minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury, water resources minister Keshab Mahanta and senior party leaders including Kamala Kalita.

Patowary, who is known as Bhojpuri queen, has sung songs in 30 different languages.

After her joining, Patowary was appointed as the brand ambassador of the party.

AGP executive president Keshab Mahanta announced Patowary would work as the ambassador of the party.

The singer urged all the women to join active politics for the development of the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Patowary said, “I don’t say ‘don’t do politics, friend’. I will say ‘continue doing politics, friend’ on development issues.”

“The women in Assam are still far behind in politics, compared to the women in other states,” she said.
