Shyamkanu Mahanta bail plea
Mahanta had previously filed a bail application but later withdrew it.

Guwahati: A key accused in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg, Shyamkanu Mahanta, on April 10 filed a fresh bail application before a special fast-track court in Guwahati.

Special public prosecutor Ziaur Kamar said the defence had sought April 13 for the hearing, but the court has scheduled it for April 22. He added that the prosecution will submit its objections to the bail plea.

Mahanta had previously filed a bail application but later withdrew it.

The case is currently being heard on a day-to-day basis by a special sessions fast-track court.

Zubeen Garg died on September 19 last year while swimming near Lazarus Island, a day before he was to perform at the North East India Festival (NEIF).

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Policeโ€™s CID investigated the incident and filed a chargesheet in December, naming seven accused. Four individuals, including Mahanta, have been charged with murder.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assembly that the case appeared to be a โ€œplain and simple murder.โ€

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police, which carried out a separate probe, stated that it found no evidence of foul play. Authorities in Assam, however, have maintained that the findings of the foreign investigation will not affect the case being pursued in the state.
