Dibrugarh: Unidentified miscreants allegedly fired two rounds of blank shots near the paternal residence of United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) chief Paresh Baruah at Jerai Gaon in Chabua, Dibrugarh district, around midnight on Sunday.

According to Baruah’s elder brother, Bimal Baruah, the incident took place at around 12:05 am. He said no CCTV footage of the incident has been recovered so far.

“A team from Chabua police station arrived at the spot and initiated an investigation. Someone is trying to disturb the law and order situation by carrying out such acts,” he said.

Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the matter. They said CCTV footage from the area is being examined, but no visual evidence has been found yet.

“We are collecting CCTV footage and probing the incident. So far, no footage has captured the act. Investigation is underway to identify and nab those involved,” a police official said.

Locals expressed concern over the incident, saying such events have occurred in the past as well and appear to be attempts to disturb peace in the region.
