Assam: Sericulture plant foundation in Mangaldai

The foundation stone of the second largest Multiend Automatic Reeling and Twisting Plant of Assam has been laid at the Government Sericulture Farm Campus in Mangaldai on Tuesday.

This on the eve of the new year, has brought a ray of hope for the weaving artisans of Darrang district and its adjoining areas.

The foundation of the Rs 30 crore project called Intensive Bivoltine Sericulture Development Programme under the Ministry of Textile funded North East Regional Textile Promotion Scheme (Assam) was ceremonially laid by Mangaldai legislator Gurujyoti Das under a spiritual atmosphere.

In this connection a public function was organized which was attended by several distinguished guests including deputy commissioner of Darrang, Ghanshyam Dass; chief executive officer of Darrang Zila Parishad, Tez Prasad Bhushal; revenue circle officer of Mangaldai, Dipsikha Saikia; journalist Bhargab Das and president, Darrang BJP Amarendra Sharma, besides a section local sericulture farmers, weavers and common people.

Speaking on the occasion Gurujyoti Das stressed the need of maintaining necessary quality in the construction work and its early completion.

He also hoped that when the project will be completed a large section of weavers of the area will be economically benefitted as they could produce their twisted mulberry yarn at a very low cost as compared to today for which they have to move to some other district.

Earlier assistant sericulture director, Darrang Jogesh Ch Talukdar gave a brief account on the proposed project and also about sericulture activities in the district under SOPD (G) & IBSDP (NERTPS) among others.
