GUWAHATI: In response to soaring temperatures and an ongoing heatwave, the district commissioner (DC) of Kamrup-Metro district in Assam has announced revised school timings to protect students’ health and safety.

Starting Monday (May 27), all government-provincialized and private schools in the Kamrup-Metro district, including Guwahati, will operate on adjusted schedules.

New School Timings:

  • LP Schools: 7:30 AM to 12:00 Noon
  • ME Schools: 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • HS and HSS Schools: 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM

In addition to the altered timings, schools must implement several measures to safeguard students during the heatwave:

Morning Assembly Adjustments: Assemblies are to be held indoors or in shaded areas to minimize sun exposure.

Fan Maintenance: Schools must ensure that electric fans are operational at all times. Any broken fans should be repaired or replaced immediately.

Relaxation of Dress Code: Students are advised to forgo blazers, waistcoats, and ties. They can also wear sandals instead of closed shoes for comfort.

Health Monitoring: Schools are to watch for signs of heat-related discomfort among students. Parents should be notified immediately if any student feels unwell, and medical assistance should be sought promptly.

Parental Awareness: Schools will inform parents about heatwave precautions through messages or phone calls.

These directives follow a previous order issued on May 22, 2024, concerning the use of water bells and the conduct of morning assemblies, which remains in effect.
