Doomdooma: The Majuli district administration and Transport Department conducted a road-safety awareness drive at schools and public locations on Thursday, focusing on students amid Assam’s continuing road accident concerns.
The special Road Safety Awareness Programme, held on September 24, involved officials from the Transport and Police departments who explained basic traffic rules and the consequences of violations.
Students were sensitised to the importance of properly wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers, using seat belts in four-wheelers, avoiding mobile-phone use while driving and not operating vehicles before attaining 18 years of age, the district administration said.
The programme was conducted at various locations across Majuli, including educational institutions, as part of efforts to improve awareness of responsible road use among students. Officials also urged students to follow traffic regulations and encourage their families and peers to do the same.
The initiative comes against the backdrop of Assam’s road-safety challenges. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ latest published state-wise Road Accidents in India data, Assam recorded 655 fatal road accidents on state highways in 2023, compared with 646 in 2022, 601 in 2021 and 596 in 2020.
The district administration said the awareness sessions were aimed at making students more conscious of safe mobility and responsible road use.
