Assam: 7 arrested after clashes during Waqf Act protests in Cachar

Guwahati: Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption have arrested a senior assistant of the Kamalpur Revenue Circle in Kamrup, Assam for allegedly demanding a accepting a bribe.

The accused government official was identified as Hirendra Choudhury, a Senior Assistant at Kamalpur Revenue Circle.

Police sources said that Choudhury was caught “red-handed” on Monday while accepting Rs 2,700 from a complainant for some land mutation work.

The complainant had filed a complaint with the Directorate, alleging Choudhury demanded Rs 3,000 for the service earlier.

Based on the complaint, the officials laid a trap and arrested Choudhury.

The tainted money was later seized and Choudhury was arrested under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, the source said.

Further legal actions are underway.
