Assam’s peasants’ organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has been named as the president of the newly floated political party Raijor Dal.
The jailed firebrand farmers’ leader was selected as the president of the KMSS-backed party on Friday night at its convention held at Moranhat in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.
Noted intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain has been named as the chief adviser of the party.
KMSS leader Bhasko D Saikia, Kabindra Chetia Phukan and Jitual Deka have been appointed as executive presidents of the party.
The other advisers of the party include Udayaditya Bharali, Dr Hitanath Lahkar, Indranee Dutta, Dr Ghanashyam Nath, Hafiz Bashir Choudhury and Sanjay Kumar Tanti.
The vice-presidents of the party are – Sumitra Hazarika, Mohinee Mohan Ligira, Kamal Kumar Medhi, Russel Hussain, Dipak Saikia, Ranjit Tamuli, Dr Harikanta Das, Charan Deka, Dilip Bora, Bedanta Laskar, Hareswar Barman, Phani Tayeng (ex-MLA), Anil Boro, Bhaben Barua (ex-MLA, Chabua), Tankeswar Moran, Siddhartha Barua and Pulin Bhattacharya.
The general secretaries are – Mahendra Dihingia, Hussain Md. Shahjahan, Rubul Das, Giri Shankar Goswami, Ankur Saikia, Alok Nath, Lohit Gogoi, Divas Phukan and Jahiruddin Laskar (Barak velley).
The secretaries are – Dipankar Kalita, Zerifa Waheed, Prabin Das, Dipak Tanti, Bhaben Handique, Dadhisar Phangsu (from Amri Karbi Students Union), Ratneswar Deori (from Tiwa Students’ Union), Nabadeep Bora, Sambit Sarma, Dhrubajyoti Phukan, Anup Jyoti Saikia, Anupam Barua (from LDP), Krishna Sarma, Diganta Changmai, Ajmal Hussain, Ashraful Islam, Abdul Wahab (Barak Valley) and Dilwara Choudhury.
The committee also has 12 assistant secretaries, 12 organising secretaries, 6 spokespersons, 2 information and publicity secretaries, 1 office secretary.
Dr Ghanashyam Nath has been named as the president of the finance committee.
The Gauhati High Court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of Akhil Gogoi in connection with his alleged role in the violence during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.
Gogoi was arrested from Assam’s Jorhat in December 2019 as a “preventive measure” in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Gogoi is behind the bars since then in connection with a National Investigation Agency (NIA) case.
The newly floated party held lengthy sessions with intellectuals, social scientists, educationists and prominent leaders on the second day of its convention on Friday.
The meeting discussed the party structure, its constitution, ideology and thrust areas.
The party also took advice from representatives of various ethnic communities and organisations including Satra Sangathan, KMSS, Veer Lachit Sena and the artiste fraternity.
