Guwahati: Protests erupted along the Hojai–Karbi Anglong border on Wednesday, following the death of a 32-year-old man, Suraj Dey, who was reportedly burnt alive during violence at Kheroni market in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.
The incident triggered large protests and increased security concerns in the border areas.
The situation became tense in Forest Bazaar, Lanka, where hundreds of local residents took to the streets, carrying placards and raising slogans to demand justice for Dey.
The unrest disrupted normal life, with shops closing and vehicular movement partially affected.
During the protests, demonstrators allegedly vandalized and pulled down the Ranaima Karbi Anglong Entry Tax Gate, further escalating tensions in the sensitive inter-district border region.
Reports indicate that Dey, who was specially-abled, was trapped inside his shop when clashes broke out linked to demands for the eviction of non-tribal settlers from protected grazing reserves.
Several structures in Kheroni market were reportedly set on fire during the violence, and Dey was unable to escape in time.
Thousands from the Bengali-speaking community gathered On Wednesday, at Forest Bazaar to protest the death, demanding justice and assurances for the safety of residents amid ongoing unrest.
Security forces have been deployed to sensitive areas, and authorities have increased monitoring to prevent further escalation.
Senior police officials urged restraint and appealed for calm.
Inspector General of Police Vivek Raj Singh visited the protest site, urged calm, and assured a thorough investigation with strict action against the culprits.
Officials said law and order will be closely maintained as investigations into the death proceed.
