Assam: Prohibition on ‘lalee gur’ in Sivasagar

The district administration of Assam’s Sivasagar district has promulgated prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC against carrying, storage and sale of degenerated molasses (lalee gur) throughout the district with immediate effect.

An order stated that any person willing to purchase degenerated molasses only as cattle feed must take prior permission from the district magistrate or additional district magistrate or from the district Veterinary Department.

The order has come into effect in view of the fact that the sale of degenerated molasses, generally called ‘lalee gur’ which should be used only as cattle feed is being widely used for preparing country liquor at certain places in the district leading to sale of spurious liquors affecting public health.

Sale of such spurious liquors made into wide-spread disturbance of public health, peace and tranquility.

The order has come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force for a period of 60 days.

Any violation of this order will be punishable under provisions of Section 188 IPC.
