Nagaon: The Nagaon district administration in Assam, has launched an investigation into the death of the Dhing gang rape case accused.

The inquiry will be conducted by a special committee headed by additional SP Pallab Tamuli.

The decision to investigate comes after the accused reportedly died while trying to escape police custody.

Authorities claim the incident occurred on August 24, when police were escorting the suspect to the crime scene for a reenactment.

According to Assam police, the accused attempted to flee and jumped into a roadside pond, where he allegedly drowned.

Personnel from the Assam State Disaster Response Force later recovered his body from the pond.

The deceased was one of three individuals accused in the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl, which occurred on August 22.

The victim was reportedly assaulted while she was returning home from tuition on her bicycle in Dhing.

The suspects allegedly approached her on a motorcycle, surrounding and attacking her.

One of the three accused was apprehended by authorities on Friday, while the other two remain at large.

The gang rape case has sparked widespread outrage across Assam, with public demands for better protection for women and severe punishment for those involved in such heinous crimes.
