Guwahati: Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday stepped up his attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the latter appears “panicked” since the press conference by senior party leader Pawan Khera on alleged foreign assets linked to the Chief Minister’s family and multiple passports held by his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of using abusive language and attempting to intimidate journalists and media organisations, asserting that political authority cannot be used to suppress facts. He said Sarma’s recent reactions reflected “desperation” rather than confidence.
“Since Pawan Khera’s press conference, the Chief Minister appears panicked. He has been making abusive remarks and threatening journalists and media owners. Power cannot be used to suppress the truth,” Gogoi said.
He further indicated that more details, including what he described as “serious allegations”, could emerge in the coming days, potentially intensifying the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.
The remarks come amid a broader controversy triggered by allegations raised by Khera concerning passport and property disclosures linked to the Chief Minister’s family. The Sarma family has denied the claims, describing them as “AI-generated fabrications”.
